I finally broke down and purchased O'Reilly's SSH, The Secure Shell: The Definitive Guide. I've been kicking around the idea of picking it up for the last couple years. So now that I've finally done it, I'm sure they'll announce the second edition within a week.
May 2003 Archives
July 15 2003. On this day, Dream Theater, Queensrÿche, and Fates Warning will converge on the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore. I will be there. Oh yes.
Seriously though, this promises to be a kick-ass show. I was fortunate enough to see Dream Theater with Joe Satriani and King's X at Pier Six last Fall, and all three bands surpassed my expectations.
I'm counting the days.
Thanks to Glen for the title. :-)
Update 05/23/2003: And more importantly, thanks to Glen for sending me this picture in the first place.
This has apparently been floating around for a while, but I encountered it for the first time today.
The movies are in Windows Media format. Apologies to anyone who is unable to view them.

Dave finally convinced me to register RobRuff.Net on BlogShares.
I promise to post more porn if the value of my blog increases significantly.
This post contains a possible Matrix Reloaded ***SPOILER***, so proceed at your own risk if you haven't seen the movie yet.
So this is why Tank had to die in the interval between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded:

This is one minor gripe I had with Reloaded... no explanation of Tank's death. Did his wounds turn out to be fatal after all, or was he killed later in a separate incident? Inquiring minds want to know.
P.S.
Yeah, I know this wasn't really much of a spoiler, but some people can be pretty anal about these things. :-)
I was just reading a thread over on MacSlash questioning the stability of Safari, particularly as compared to Mozilla.
For what it's worth, I use Safari at work everyday; have been since the first beta release. I have it running for 9+ hours a day, with quite a few web pages loaded in different tabs, and I honestly can't remember the last time it crashed on me. For beta software it has been pretty damn solid.
Now I've been a loyal Mozilla user for the past 3 years or so, but Moz can't touch Safari on OS X, IMHO. It's nowhere near fast enough for me, and it doesn't offer any extra functionality that makes its bulk worthwhile. And as far as stability, I've already mentioned that Safari has been a solid performer.
I've continued to use Mozilla as my main browser under Linux, though over the past few days Mozilla Firebird has been taking over that spot. It's faster and more lightweight than Mozilla, and it doesn't sacrifice any of the functionality that I need. In fact, its tabbed browsing features are better "out of the box" than Mozilla's (one really needs to install MultiZilla to get the most out of tabbed browsing under Moz).
Anyway, just thought I'd throw my $0.02 into the whole browser controversy. :-)
I have one complaint about the Matrix phenomenon: the hordes of pathetic fan-boys that came out of the woodwork to show us all what deep thinkers they are by waxing philosophical about the whole Matrix concept. *yawn*. And then there are the uber snobs who tell everyone how disappointed they are because The Matrix Reloaded is too heavy on the action and more style over substance than its predecessor.
My response to these faux-intellectuals: Shut up. Just shut the fuck up. Your minds have been clouded by excessive amounts of time spent masturbating to pictures of Agent Scully. If you're looking for depth in these movies, you are a very misguided individual. They are essentially action movies, not meant to be (and shouldn't be) taken all that seriously. On that level, they are immensely entertaining.
But, if you're too elite to just take it for what it is and have fun... Well, what can I tell you; just go back in your room and lock the door. Agent Scully awaits.
Holy shit.
I recently had the pleasure of getting a D-Link DFE 530TX+ ethernet card to work under Linux. And by pleasure, I mean that it took a bit of tinkering to get the damn thing working.
I checked the Linux Ethernet How-to before buying this card. The DFE 530TX is listed as being supported by Linux. I bought the DFE 530TX+. Note the "+"; it makes a big difference.
As it turns out, the 530TX+ uses the RealTek 8139 chipset, which is a completely different chipset than the one used by the 530TX. And of course the RealTek 8139 chipset is only semi-supported by Linux. Bummer.
Not surprisingly, a few Google searches revealed that I'm not the only one to have trouble getting this particular card working under my OS of choice. Believe it or not, D-Link provides Linux drivers on their web site. For some reason I chose not to try those drivers. We'll come back to that part later.
Anyhow, and bit more Google-ing revealed that one needs to enable experimental code in the kernel in order to have access to the rtl8139 driver (in the 2.2 kernels anyway, which is what I'm using). So I did. And the driver didn't work. When I tried to load it, I saw the dreaded "Device or resource busy" error. Sigh. I tried passing IRQ and I/O addresses as parameters to the driver (which I was fairly certain was not necessary), to no avail.
After a bit of grumbling and saying of naughty words, I was all ready to buy a new ethernet card. But, as a last-ditch effort, I decided to try the vendor-supplied drivers. I compiled rtl8139.c,and installed rtl8139.o into the modules directory. With very low expectations, I ran insmod rtl8139. And it worked. The driver loaded and recognized my card.
Yeah, I know. I should have used this driver in the first place. But it's working now, so I can't complain. Not too much, anyway.
Yes, it's been almost a month since the last time I posted anything here. I've been busy working, and being sick and stuff. I'm going to try and start making some changes to the layout soon, as it's been pointed out to me that using absolute widths instead of percentages for page elements is often a bad idea (I've actually known this for quite sometime, probably longer than the smartass who pointed it out to me, but I've become lazy and corrupt recently :-).
Anyway, just thought I'd check in and let all three of my loyal readers know that I'm still here.
