Today, after years of longing, I visited the "Exorcist House" at 3600 Prospect Street in Georgetown.
Following a nice stroll down M Street, through the Shops At Georgetown, we reached the base of the infamous "Hitchcock steps" leading up to Prospect Street. I purchased a disposable camera from the nearby Exxon station at the outrageous price of $13.95 (I don't own a digital camera and I didn't want to settle for cell phone camera photos. Also, I didn't plan things out well enough ahead of time).
First I took a couple shots of the stair case from the bottom, and then we began the trek up the stairs. Upon reaching the top The Tombs was in view across the street. We crossed Prospect for a nice wide-angle view of the house. It is much smaller in reality than it was made to appear in the movie, what with the extension that was built onto the side to make Regan's bedroom window overlook the stairs. Take a look at this post on The Exorcist Revisited blog for a comparison of the movie house vs. the real house.
Finally, back down the steps to M Street, a last gaze up the stairs, and then on the way home.
Needless to say, I took a bunch of pictures, but they won't be available to post until I get the disposable camera developed. This little day trip has convinced me that it is in fact time for me to enter the late 20th century and purchase (or receive as a gift) a digital camera.
In the mean time, take a look at the afore mentioned Exorcist Revisited blog. It links to a Flickr gallery of Georgetown locations that were featured in The Exorcist.
The Exorcist, by the way, is one of my Top Five Awesomest™ Movies Ever.
